Counselling Begins
Up to 16 sessions with your counsellor, online or in person.
Initial Assessment
Before we allocate you to a counsellor, we need to see you for an initial assessment. These take around 30–45 minutes and are usually delivered by telephone. We'll take some details and provide you with information about our service, including the donation system.
£10 admin charge applies.
Waiting List
As a popular charity service, there is usually a wait following your assessment. Our counsellors are either fully qualified (minimum Diploma or Foundation Degree level) or trainees with a minimum of two years training. All are supervised by qualified supervisors.
You can discuss your preferences at assessment. Choosing a qualified-only counsellor may mean a longer wait.
We do not prioritise or bump the waiting list. All waiting times are approximate.
Counselling Sessions
Once allocated, your counsellor will contact you to book. We start with 8 sessions, which can be extended to 16 if both you and your counsellor feel there is benefit in continuing.
Due to high demand, New Hope cannot generally provide more than 16 sessions of therapy.
Counselling costs
Every session we provide costs us approximately £40 to deliver. To maintain long-term sustainability, we have a minimum charge of £20 per session.
If you can donate on top of the minimum, please do — and if you're a UK taxpayer we can claim an additional 25% through Gift Aid at no extra cost to you. Concessionary rates may be available subject to funding.
Evening sessions are in high demand and are primarily for those in full-time employment who cannot attend during the day.
Open to everyone
New Hope operates according to a Christian Code of Ethics, but you do not have to be a Christian to access counselling with us. We are here for all from any faith group or none. The counselling does not have a religious content unless faith issues are something you particularly want to bring.
